People of Our Lady Of Loretto Parish Celebrate Centennial of the Dedication of Their Church

Our Lady of Loretto Parish was established in the early 1830's with the original church on the banks of the Hudson by Market Street. After expanding the Church in 1867, and then outgrowing the Church on the Hudson, construction on a larger Church on Fair Street was begun in 1906. On August 4, 1906 the Putnam Recorder announced: "On Sunday afternoon, August 12, the cornerstone of the new Church of Our Lady of Loretto at Cold Springon Hudson will be laid…" The work was completed in 1907. In October of 1907 His Grace, John Murphy Farley, Archbishop of New York dedicated the "New" Church of Our Lady of Loretto on Fair Street. To celebrate this milestone in our local history, Our Lady of Loretto Parish joyfully welcomes His Eminence, Edward Cardinal Egan, Archbishop of New York, who will celebrate Mass at Our Lady of Loretto Church on Sunday October 28th, 2007.

The press of 1907 reported the original dedication of the Church in the following manner: "On Sunday, October 20, His Grace Archbishop Farley officiated at the blessing of the new Church of Our Lady of Loretto at Cold Spring…The Archbishop presided, vested in cappa magna, and assisted by the Right Rev. Monsignor O'Keefe of Highland Falls and the Very Reverend Monsignor Burtsell of Rondout (Kingston). The Solemn Mass was celebrated by the Reverend Drain, with the Reverend Father Brody of Matteawan as deacon and the Reverend Father LaFort of Peekskill, as subdeacon. A very practical and instructive sermon was delivered by the Very Rev. Patrick Daly, V.G. (Vicar General of the Archdiocese), who easily rose to the inspiring occasion with a splendid discourse on the marvelous growth of the Church and her right of unquestioning obedience to her children. Surely it was a joyful day for the Catholics of Cold Spring village. With their beautiful church free from debt they can feel that the task they set out to accomplish some years ago has been carried out successfully and their sacrifices and prayers have been rewarded. And what makes this temple even more beautiful to Catholics is the knowledge that it is completed in every detail without one cent of mortgage placed on it. No wonder then they rejoice to-day, for they have great reason to be proud of their work. May God bless them and their descendants until the end of time!"

The parish family of Our Lady of Loretto joyfully celebrates the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the "New" Church, and the one hundred years of their daily worship of Almighty God.
