The Community Pool Dear Editor:
I'm curious and concerned as to why the Democratic Team ads, Bill Mazzuca's election platform, and Nancy Montgomery's election platform all have referred to a feasibility and cost study being done for a community pool after the Recreation Master Plan is adopted in just a few months.
Mitchell Kurtz (a NYC architect) was hired by the town and has worked for more than a year with the Philipstown Recreation Commission on the Recreation Master Plan that included the feasibility and cost study for a community pool. The prospective pool addition would have been at the North/ East corner of the building, continuing out past the current location of the gymnasium. The Recreation Master Plan was reviewed by the Open Space Institute as part of the process to reach an agreement with that organization's pending donation of the Glenclyffe property to the Town of Philipstown. The draft agreement between OSI and Philipstown Recreation will permit an increase of up to 5000 square feet to the footprint of the buildings, up to the height of the existing buildings. 5000 square feet is 50 by 100 feet…which is not enough space for a community pool, 2 locker rooms, a pump room, and a small seating area.
Back in June, I had conversations with a member of the Recreation Commission and an employee of the Recreation Department, who were sad to admit that a pool would not be in the Master Plan.
I find it very curious that the pool is now being advertised as a possibility for the community. It makes me question the integrity of everything else that is mentioned in the Democratic Team ads and the election platforms of Bill Mazzuca and Nancy Montgomery.
