Fire Prevention Week at Haldane
Fire Prevention Week was commemorated at Haldane with assemblies for students in grades 1-12. Kindergarten students will be visiting the Cold Spring Firehouse for their introduction to fire safety. Dan Valentine, firefighter and former Cold Spring Fire Chief, was the emcee for all of the presentations. Sparky the Fire Dog, a giant smoke detector and, of course, Freddie the Fire Truck made the elementary programs exciting for the children.
Mr. Valentine talked about school fire drills and how they help keep children safe in the event of a real fire. He heartily endorsed having fire drills at home as well. He stressed the importance of smoke alarms with working batteries to keep homes safe. The importance of wearing safety helmets when using bicycles, scooters, rollerskates or any other wheeled toys was highlighted. Children under 14 must wear helmets or risk being ticketed. Their parents will also receive tickets. People are working to pass a law to make adults wear helmets as well. He also described the variety of protective clothing and equipment that help keep firefighters safe.
The junior firefighters who participated in the Firefighters Academy over the summer were honored and a video of highlights of the program was shown. Thanks go to all of the firefighters who volunteered to teach fire safety to our children. Firefighters Dan Valentine, Tom Valentine and Vinny Cimino represented the Cold Spring Station. Chief Rodney Tudor, Captain Wendy Heintz and Firefighter John Spada were from the Garrison Station. Continental Village was represented by 2nd Assistant Chief Charley Volt and 2nd Lieutenant Mario DePalma. Haldane seniors and North Highlands Firefighters Karolina Alves, Lauren Merritt and Robbyn Spinelli were extra special members of the program.
Don't forget to change your smoke alarm batteries when you turn your clocks back on Nov. 4.
