Designer/Writer Elissa Held- Kestenbaum Shares Tips for Success with Design Class at BOCES
"If you believe in yourself, you can allow opportunities to come to you," said designer Elissa Held-Kestenbaum, speaking to Sandi Garofalo's Advertising Art and Design class at BOCES. Ms. Held- Kestenbaum should know. A children's clothing designer for 14 years, she has soared to the top of many design fields, including handbags, accessories, fashion - even books, creating children's pop-up books for Simon & Schuster.
"I consider myself a product developer," Ms. Held- Kestenbaum said, as she passed around her creations, from ornate handbags furbished with floral appliqués to bags that looked like shoeboxes and others with multicolored ribbons dangling from them. "I don't like to limit myself to any one area."
In addition to sharing her designs and career history with the students, Ms. Held- Kestenbaum, who designs with teacher Sandi Garofalo, also had some good sound business advice that holds true for all areas of life. "When you're dealing with people in business," she said, "you really have to treat people the way that you want to be treated. That's key." Ms. Held-Kestenbaum also had some words of wisdom about the work ethic of the future designers: "There's always part of any job that you won't like, like sending specs to the factory, taking measurements, and detailing all the paperwork," she said, "but you'll find that when you get an end result that you love, it's worth it."
