Garrison Golfers Play 290 Holes in a Day in "Speed Golf" to Benefit the Garrison Children's Education Fund
GCEF Trustees Jim Young, Nicole Jandrucko, Emily Dupree, and Timothy Downey. Young, Dupree and Downey were three of the "Speed Golfers", and Jandrucko was the event organizer.

The skies opened, soaking clothes, carts and clubs, but nine intrepid golfers played hole, after hole, after hole, for a total of 290 holes of golf at the Highlands Country Club on Friday October 19.

Starting at 9 am sharp, the players undertook the challenge of "Speed Golf", a new kind of golf marathon, to raise funds for the Garrison Children's Education Fund, the local nonprofit school foundation supporting the children of the Garrison School District.

Golfers were sponsored on a "per hole" basis; the players would end a round of golf, and move on to the next, playing until 4 pm, when they gathered, damp and weary, for a celebratory photo-op and toast.

Playing backgrounds ranged from Barbara Jones, an experienced competitive golfer, (who played 58 holes of golf) to Tim Downey, marketing consultant and Garrison dad. "I've only played three times since high school, but I'll give this a try," commented Downey. Special "celebrity" golfers at the fundraiser included Cameron Young, a Garrison School 5th grader and Josh Wimer, Garrison School 2nd grader. Both boys have qualified for and competed in the U.S. Kids World's Championship at Pinehurst, North Carolina last July, and helped at the fundraiser as soon as school was over.

"It was a fantastic day! Everyone showed up ready to play their best for the school, rain or shine. For a first time event, it was a huge accomplishment. I look forward to building on this next year," said organizer and GCEF trustee Nicole Jandrucko. Other Speed Golfers included Paul Adler, Emily Dupree, Jimmy O'Rourke, Keith Wimer, and Jim Young.

Highlands Country Club donated the course and carts for the event. The fundraiser was a resounding success, raising thousands of dollars from over 90 sponsors; funds which will be allocated towards enrichment programs for the children of the Garrison School.
