Cardinal Egan Visits Our Lady of Loretto
This past Sunday, October 28, 2007, His Eminence Edward Cardinal Egan visited the Parish of Our Lady of Loretto in Cold Spring in celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the dedication of the "new" Church in Cold Spring. The Parish of Our Lady of Loretto was founded in the 1830's and is the first parish in the Archdiocese of New York established outside of Manhattan Island, the "Mother Church" of the Hudson Valley.
Cardinal Egan's visit highlighted the Centennial celebrations at our Lady of Loretto Parish, whose Church, as well as the Chapel of Saint Joseph in Garrison, serves all of Philipstown. The Mass highlighted all of the restoration projects in the Church, which began in 2002 with the help of the parishioners' "time, talents and treasures". The priests, trustees and parish council joined the parishioners in welcoming Cardinal Egan to Cold Spring. The Cardinal mentioned the daily celebration of "the Prayer of Prayers, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass" that has taken place within these hallowed walls… one hundred years of the people publicly worshiping God each day.
To the best of everyone's memory, this was the first time that the Cardinal Archbishop of New York has visited the Church. The Archbishops of New York have visited, but up till now it was before they were elevated to the rank of Cardinal. Archbishop McCloskey consecrated the expanded Church of Our Lady on Market Street in 1867 and was made the first American Cardinal in 1867; Archbishop Farley dedicated the "new" Church of Our Lady of Loretto on Fair Street in October 1907, and was named Cardinal in 1911; and Archbishop O'Connor visited the parish in 1984 for the 150th Anniversary of the founding of the parish, and was named a Cardinal in 1985. The Honor Guard of the Knights of Columbus joined the parish for celebration of the Mass.
The photo shows His Eminence Edward Cardinal Egan flanked by the Honor Guard of the Knights of Columbus and the concelebrating priests: Father Robert Warren of Graymoor, a Weekend Associate; Father James Tubridy, Pastor Emeritus of Our Lady of Loretto; Cardinal Egan; Father Brian McSweeney, the current Pastor; and Father Gabriel Awuafor the Parochial Vicar of Our Lady of Loretto. To the right of Father Gabriel is Dan Dillon, former Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus in Cold Spring.
