Gifts for Oft-Neglected Adolescents at Holiday Time

A meeting of the Putnam County Children's Committee
Once again the Putnam County Children's Committee has come to the Community Action Program's (CAP's) assistance by giving them a generous $750 donation to be used for Holiday and Christmas gifts for Putnam County's adolescents. Many groups and associations remember the young children of the county at holiday time, but somehow forget about gifts for the young adolescents, and they forget that cash is often scarce for these youngsters to buy gifts for their foster parents and their needy families .

The younger children love the dolls, games, and other toys that are provided, but groups don't know what to give the teenagers. When questioned, CAP members told The Putnam County Children's Committee members that they provide these young people with such gifts as DVD players, "pay-as-yougo" cell phones, and checks. This year's $750 donation by The Children's Committee is in addition to the Fall $500 that the committee gave CAP for school supplies for their annual back-to-school drive. In past years, the Children's Committee has given CAP $500 for the holiday gifts, but, with higher prices and tighter budgets, they have raised this to $750. Besides this money for CAP, the committee gives each foster child in the county $50 for their holiday or Christmas gifts

This year, The Putnam County Children's Committee is celebrating its 90th anniversary by giving college scholarships, allowances and birthday gifts to Putnam County's foster boys and girls. They also provide help when emergencies arise which do not qualify for assistance from the Department of Social Services, such as medical costs, day care expenses, tutoring and recreational fees. This all-volunteer committee depends on the community for financial assistance. All donations are tax deductible and the committee is eligible to receive corporate matching grants. For questions regarding a donation or learning more about the committee, call Janet Canniff at 845-225- 3225.
