Veterans Day Weekend Events at New Windsor Cantonment and the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor
The courage and sacrifice of war veterans- from the pre- Revolutionary beginnings of our nation up to the present day- will be celebrated and commemorated throughout Veterans Day weekend at the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor and New Windsor Cantonment State Historic Site, with a variety of events including a "living history" Timeline of Soldiers, tours of the Hall of Honor, and videotape interviews of veterans by Regional News Network (RNN-TV). All these events are free, but some are by appointment. For more information, please call 845- 561-1765.
Saturday, November 10, join a free guided tour of the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor to celebrate the one-year anniversary of its opening to the public. Guided tours are by appointment at 10:30am, 1:30 and 3:30pm; visitors are also welcome to visit on their own during open hours. The tours will highlight the Hall of Honor's compilation to date of the Roll of Honor, the nation's first comprehensive database of Purple Heart recipients.
On Sunday, November 11, beginning at 1pm, join the Cantonment and Hall of Honor in their tribute to America's veterans, including performances of patriotic music by local school ensembles. At 1:30pm members of the Heritage Junior High School Band will perform patriotic music, followed at 2pm by a demonstration of weaponry from different time periods. At 3pm The New York Military Academy Band will perform a patriotic repertoire. The Timeline of Soldiers, costumed "veterans" of different wars and eras, will speak with visitors about the military history they represent, from 1 until 4:30 pm.
Monday, November 12, Regional News Network (RNNTV) will partner with the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor and the Veterans History Project of the Library of Congress to conduct video interviews with veterans. Interview appointments can be scheduled between 10am and 3pm by calling (845) 561-1765. If you are a veteran or activeduty serviceperson with wartime experience, or a civilian who has worked in support of America's armed forces, and you would like to record your personal recollections to be archived at the Veterans History Project, please call for an interview appointment: (845) 561-1765. For these interviews you do not need to be a recipient of the Purple Heart.
"On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month," is the traditional time for saluting America's servicemen and women, because that was when the guns fell silent on Armistice Day, when the First World War concluded. The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, along with its partners at RNN-TV and the Veterans History Project, and New Windsor Cantonment State Historic Site is proud to extend the salute throughout the weekend, inviting visitors to join in the weekend's events.

It is open Monday through Saturday, 10am to 5pm, Sunday 1- 5pm. Admission is free. For more information call (845) 561- 1765 or visit www.thepurpleheart.com
