O'Neill JV Girls Soccer Ends the Season on a High Note
After a 4-game winning streak, the Raiders traveled to Tuxedo on Monday October 22. The ladies tied in a double overtime hard fought game, 2- 2. Both Raider goals came in the first half, with Sarah Bosch putting in the first goal early off a pass from Siera Dillman in the 18. Annie O'Rourke got her first goal of the season and O'Neill's second goal, finding the back of the net off a pass from Captain Holly Fraser. Tuxedo tied it up in the second half and took the game into double OT. Despite losing several key players to injuries during the course of the game, the ladies played hard, often finding themselves in new positions. Captain Marion Copeland rallied the team in the second overtime period, but were they unable to capitalize on their efforts with a goal.
Wed 24 Oct found the Raiders now hosting the Tuxedo team. The girls came out to show Tuxedo what they were made of after the previous tie, despite the recent injury losses to the team. Captain Marion Copeland fired up the team with the first goal only 10 minutes into the game, stealing the ball, volleying it off her thigh and straight into the goal. Leading scorer Siera Dillman received a pass from Avery Giordonello and made the score 2-0. Copeland received a great cross by Cristina Tenuta in front of the goal, who passed the ball over to a wide open Biehle who put it into the goal for a final score of 3-0.
Their final home game on rainy Friday the 26th against Port Jervis found the Raiders on top 5-0 by games end. Sarah Bosch sparked their offensive drive, getting the first goal off a pass from Christina Tenuta. Bosch who led the team in assists, turned around and found Olivia Janicelli open who put in the second goal. Lindsey Phillips got the 3rd goal from a hard struck direct kick for her first goal of the season. Avery Giordonello found herself on the firing line as she soundly put away a penalty kick for our fourth goal. Their 5th and final goal came from 8th grader Lindsey Crill, who determinedly pursued the ball in front of the goal and fought to finally get it in.
How well the entire team developed and evolved is a testament to the hard work they put in all season long. It has been amazing to see many of these young players adapt so well to new positions as injuries plagued the team and as the situation warranted. Without a goalie, Andrea Constantinou volunteered to give it a try and ended up with 7 shut outs this season. Lindsey Phillips filled in all over the field, all year round. Jennifer Perkins anchored a changing defensive line up with Jackie Bell, Autumn Halstead and others. Their final record was 9-3-1. Coach Trzepkowski would like to thank the team, manager Olivia Levinson, Coaches Sarah Joehl and Gary Phillips for a great year. She would also like to thank the O'Neill Athletic Dept., the High School and Middle School administrations, parents, and community for their support all season.
