Orange County Woman Faces Charges for Drug Possession

Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports the arrest of a Newburgh woman after a deputy investigating a single vehicle crash located illegal drugs In the possession of the driver.

At about 10:45pm on October 23 Deputy Tom Corless was dispatched to the area of Sunset Hill Rd. in tide Town of Putnam Valley for a reported one-car crash. Upon his arrival the deputy located the vehicle and was able to determine that the driver of the vehicle had driven off the roadway while attempting to back up. While investigating the circumstances of the Incident and examining the vehicle for damage the deputy observed several partially smoked marijuana cigarettes on the center console of the vehicle. The driver was also found to have marijuana and quantity of a prescription medication on her person.

Candice Balchunas, age 26, of Leslie Rd. Newburgh was arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of Marijuana, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 7th Degree and issued traffic summonses related to the crash. The defendant was processed and later released to Putnam Hospital Center personnel for voluntary evaluation. She is scheduled to appear before thq Town of Putnam Valley Justice Court to answer the charges on November 13, 2007. If convicted of the narcotics charge the defendant faces a penalty of up to $1,000.00 in fines and or no mere than 1 year in jail.
