Kids From Philipstown Recreation After School Program Pitch in to Help Haldane Blood Drive This Friday
Youngsters from the Philipstown Recreation After School Program are preparing notes with string to remind their parents that donating blood saves lives. This effort will expand awareness of the November drive, this Friday, 2:30-8pm in the Haldane Gym and has the potential to help meet the goal of collecting 125 pints for distribution to patients in local hospitals. Hudson Valley blood supplies are at dangerously low levels due to the warmer than usual weather of early October (fewer people donate when the weather is nice) and the fact that only two percent of New Yorkers donate (compared with five percent nationally).
Providing childcare on the day of the drive will be Allison Jacoby of St.Philips Nursery School in Garrison. Allison will bring materials for youngsters to play with and occupy themselves while Mom and Dad donate. A NY Blood Center representative, Lisa, expects be at Haldane this week to recruit juniors and seniors for the event. Students who are 16 can donate as long as they have parental permission. Forms can be picked up in the nurse's office. Students 17 and older can donate with their ID and Social Security number. If you miss Lisa, you can still sign up with Nurse Candy Z. at Haldane or call her at 845-265-9254 Ext.125. Please remember eat a good lunch the day of the drive, drink plenty of water and eat iron rich foods before donating such as green leafy vegetables, nuts and raisins.
