Haldane Football Wins Section 1 Championship

The games are played for a reason. At the high school level, it's all about pride. On Sunday afternoon, Haldane drove over to Mahopac to face defending Class D State Champs Tuckahoe, in a section 1 Finals game. The outcome was positive, with Haldane winning, 12-6.

The Devils entered the field confident, knowing they had nothing to lose. Most "experts" in the papers, on internet blogs and even a local tv show, gave Haldane no chance. Using this as motivation, they let their voice be heard on the field.

Led by Seniors Robert Percacciolo and Mike Thorpe, the Devils captured the Section 1 Championship for the first time since the 2000 season. Both Perk and Thorpe (16 ca- 130yds) scored Touchdowns. Apologies to Mike Thorpe for the report in Monday's paper. Those of us who know Haldane know the real deal.

Offensively, Derek O'Dell controlled the inside game with 14 rushes for 80 yards. Perk threw 4 times for 60 yards; Thorpe, Matt Giachinta and Kyle Van Tassel all gaining yardage on receptions.

Defensively, Haldane shut down the potentially potent offense of Tuckahoe. O'Dell (20 tackles) and Raphael Famighetti (12 tackles) had great games. Big plays upfront from Granite Frisenda (8), Andy Lakota (7), Kyle Van Tassel (5) and Robert Percacciolo (5). Cameron Zampino had his best game to date, recording 7 tackles, and a clutch sack for an 8-yard loss deep into the 4th quarter, sealing the victory for Haldane.

Next up are the State Quarter Finals. Game time is 4pm on Saturday, November 11 at Mahopac High School. They will be opposed by Section 9 champs, Eldred High School.

Thanks to all who supported the team and joined in on the parade of champions. Let's do it again next week.
