Haldane Girls Varsity Soccer's Sectional Semi-Final Sudden Death Overtime Loss Doesn't Diminish a Great Season
After a strong regular season, the Haldane Girls Varsity Soccer team lost the Sectional Semi-Finals 1 - 0 in the 109th minute in the second period of sudden death overtime. Nevertheless, with ten seasoned seniors and some very talented underclasswomen, coach, John Milner, knew he had the right ingredients for a powerful year. It was indeed a strong year for the Haldane girls and parents. With ten wins, three ties, five losses, the team had a great season with some impressive statistics.
Senior Faye Rice, a five-year veteran, was an outstanding stopper, who, along with starting defenders, Senior Lily Rubino, Senior Sarah Olmsted and Senior Sophie Waitkins stopped many shots from reaching Senior keeper, Alex Milner. Sadly, Sophie Waitkins ruptured her ACL early in the season in a tough game against Bronxville and was sorely missed. Junior, Phoebe Risher did a good job stepping up to fill the gap. Nevertheless, few balls went past Milner whose record shows the third least amount of goals out of 70 Section One teams. Backup Keeper, Freshman Liz Milner, had 18 saves with no goals.
Dynamic starting forward, Senior Emily Marsh, with 15 goals and four assists, including a hat trick against Blindbrook, was supported by Senior Ally Lebron with 4 goals and three assists and Senior Karolina Alves with one goal and three assists. Junior Katie Shaughnessy and Sophomores Hannah Diebboll, Grace O'Malley and Tatiana Gilmartin also scored a goal each during the season. Sophomore Megan Rohan, injured mid-season, scored three goals with three assists. Liz Milner scored five goals and had three assists with a hat trick against Tuckahoe.
Strong mid-field play was extended by Senior Juliana Durr, whose high energy was always constant in left midfield. Hannah Deibboll grew to be a strong right mid-fielder. Center mid-field was shared by Megan Rohan and Emily Marsh. Additional players who gave their all include Senior Kaylie Shartner, Sophomores Katlyn Mastrantone and Gina DiMeo and Freshman Mary Mechalakos.
Senior, Max Tiffany-Miller was an outstanding Team Manager who helped the team administratively and strategically. All together, though the team did not realize their dreams of playing in the Sectional Finals, they should feel great about the overall success of the season and the fun times they had together this year.
