Dan Valentine Honored as First Recipient of Michael Neuner Fire Prevention and Safety Award Legislator Robert McGuigan apologizes for repeated absences by Margaret Sternberg

| Cold Spring Fire Company Past Chief Dan Valentine was honored by the Putnam County Legislature, County Executive Bob Bondi, Commissioner of Emergency Services Robert McMahon, NY State, family, friends and many, many children who have been a part of the five-year old CSFD Junior Firefighter Academy at the November 7, 2007 meeting of the Putnam County Legislature, becoming the first recipient of the Michael Neuner Fire Prevention and Safety Award
Legislator Vinny Tamagna made the initial presentation of a proclamation to Chief Valentine, who stood before a room packed with well-wishers. Calling the Junior Firefighter Academy a "model for the entire nation," Tamagna credited Valentine for the idea of an Academy as well as making it a reality.
Valentine was praised for a "unique method for teaching fire prevention and community risk reduction," also receiving praise for the Academy and an honorarium from the state.
Valentine modestly gave credit to others, citing Philipstown Recreation, the Cold Spring Fire Department, parents and insurance companies, briefly talking about Michael Neuner, who died in the line of duty, before being overcome by emotion and ending by thanking those honoring him.
The meeting was otherwise devoted to passing resolutions that had been pre-filed in the various Legislative committees.
Making a rare appearance at the meeting, Legislator Robert McGuigan issued a mea culpa to his colleagues and constituents for repeated absences not only from Legislative committee meetings but from the monthly meetings of the full Legislature, including public meetings on the budget and the public meeting in which voting was done to override the County Executive's vetoes of the 2008 Legislative budget. Legislators at that meeting had commented that his absence may have been responsible for results that might have ended differently had he been present.
McGuigan attributed some of his absences to surgery, saying his absences, in general, had not been meant with "malice" and said that in the future he would fulfill his obligations as an elected official.
The December meetings of the Legislature will be posted on the PCN&R's website as soon as it becomes available.
