| Because of the efforts of SeniorNet volunteers and the generous donation from the Friends of Senior Citizens of Putnam County, the original computers in the Putnam County Office for the Aging SeniorNet Learning Center have been replaced with new, upgraded models, equipped with 19" flat-screen monitors, which enable students to see the computer screen more clearly. Not only are these new computers much faster and with larger monitors, they are configured to enable the Mahopac SeniorNet Learning Center to handle any programs that might come along in the next five or more years.
When the Putnam County Office for the Aging SeniorNet Learning Center was established in 2002, at the William Koehler Senior Center at 180 Route 6 in Mahopac, the original six computers were obtained through a grant from IBM and Verizon. At that time they were more than adequate to enable students to learn Basic Computer Skills, Word Processing, and the use of the Internet and Email. But now, more than five years later, with over 3,000 classes having been taught to over 500 students, the course offerings have expanded to include such popular classes as Photoshop, Genealogy, and Digital Cameras. With the price of computers decreasing and the size of the software programs increasing, it was time to upgrade their computers so that they can continue to offer the latest popular classes, using equipment that would parallel what new computer purchasers would see at home.
The upcoming registration dates for Winter SeniorNet classes are November 28 at the Putnam Valley SeniorNet (117 Town Park Lane in Putnam Valley) and December 4 for the William Koehler Center in Mahopac (180 Route Six. Register from 9 to 12noon at these centers. For more information on registration and classes to be given call Cathy O'Brien at 845-628-6423 or Email: cobrien(ia),bestweb.net.
