Rest of Village Misses Seeing the Trick or Treaters To the Editor
Last week was Halloween, and it is truly one of my favorite holidays. Often I think that Halloween is as much fun for the adults as it is for the children, and as a father of three, I certainly had a good time.
I can't put my finger on exactly when it happened, but Halloween has changed significantly in the Cold Spring / Nelsonville area, and while some aspects of that change are good, some aren't so good. As pretty much everyone knows, Parsonage Street, and Parrott Street are the place to be on Halloween. It is great that the residents there go out of their way to put on such a great show. It is also great that the police close off the streets, making it a safe haven for the children. The decorations are over the top at many of the houses, and there really are only a few houses that don't get involved.
Although I often work on Halloween, this year I had the opportunity to take my kids out trick or treating, and got to see all the decorations first hand. Of course, Parsonage Street, and Parrott Street were where they wanted to go. I was quite impressed, and shocked by the sheer number of kids I saw in that small area of the village.
I fondly remember a time; back in the late 1980's, and early 1990's when kids flocked to Forge Gate on Halloween. Cars dropped off kids that we didn't even know who went door to door collecting goodies. Constitution Drive was just as busy. We often ran out of candy, but that was alright; We turned off the lights, and closed up shop for the night, and the kids moved on, visiting all the other streets in town. I miss those days. Seeing ten children the entire night, that was all we got in Forge Gate this year, was a big disappointment.
To the residents of Parsonage and Parrott streets; you do an excellent job decorating for the holidays, not just Halloween, but also Christmas. There are so many other streets, and houses, and people who would love to answer the door a few times on Halloween. I know that you don't purposely keep the kids away from other areas of town, but perhaps next year, as you are dropping the treats into the treat bags, you could whisper "Forge Gate" into the ears of the visiting apparitions. I love what you all do each year for the holiday, but I also miss seeing the kids knocking at my door, and I can't afford to move to Parrott or Parsonage Street.
To the children, and parents; please keep in mind there is more to Cold Spring, and Nelsonville, and plenty of other families that would love to see the little ghouls and goblins. Next year, why not take some time and trick or treat all over town, you have lots of friendly neighbors that miss handing out candy every year, and please stop by Forge Gate, because Halloween isn't the same without you!
