PVHS World Language Club Hosts International Dinner

Teachers Kris and Alexis Thornton, right rear, and some of the members of the World Language Club, who sponsored the International Dinner on November 9. On the wall behind them are skull masks commemorating the Dia de Los Muertos (All Saints Day).
Empanadas? Crepes? Swedish meatballs? Those foods and many more were on the menu on Friday, November 9, as the 30-plus-member Putnam Valley High School (PVHS) World Language Club celebrated its fourth annual International Dinner in the high school's cafeteria.

Club advisor and Languages Other Than English teacher Alexis Thornton explained that this annual fall event is open to any PVCSD student, staff, faculty, or community member who wishes to attend, and families are encouraged to come. The low cost of just $5 per adult and $3 per student for an allyou can-eat buffet, is a genuine bargain, and, adds Ms. Thornton, there is often entertainment included. "We try to showcase a variety of student art work as decorations as well as play music from different cultures, offer games from different countries, and encourage dancing or performances to different types of music if anyone is willing to showcase a talent," she noted.

Proceeds from the dinner are used in a variety of ways, Ms. Thornton explained. "We try to use part of the proceeds to donate to a country (through organizations such as the Red Cross) that has experienced a major devastating event. One year, for example, we donated money to the Red Cross for the victims of the tsunami in the Pacific. We also use some of the proceeds to purchase supplies for arts & crafts events to celebrate major international holiday events and to observe National Foreign Language Week in the spring. Finally, we purchase food supplies to prepare foods from different countries at our twice-a-month meetings."
