Town Board Adopts Putnam Valley 2008 Budget 12.16% increase in tax rate anticipated by Edward Paul Greiff
Of the many items on the agenda at Putnam Valley's Town Board meeting held November 14, 2007 the immediate item affecting residents was the budget. After making a few additional last minute cuts, the Putnam Valley Town Board adopted the 2008 Budget which will result in a 12.16% tax increase over 2007. For the person whose property is assessed at $500,000 this means a tax increase of approximately $93 for the year. Councilman Bob Tendy was quick to comment that in view of the Town's expenses and rising prices they were fortunate to be able to reduce the tax level rise to 12.16%.
In Legislator Sam Oliverio's report to the Town, he told the Board that Putnam County's 2008 Budget reflects a 24% tax increase and that he did not vote in favor of it.
Carl Sandberg reported the Commission for the Conservation of the Environment has two openings to complete their seven-person commission and they are looking for volunteers. Those interested can call Mr. Iataka, the Chairman, at 914 760-5535 or attend their next meeting on Monday, November 26, 2007 held at the Parks & Rec. Annex starting at 4:45 and running until 6:15pm.
Putnam Valley Volunteer Ambulance Corps First Lieutenant Sheryl Keating reported that for the month of October the Ambulance Corps had 47 medical emergencies and 4 automobile accidents. They had a total of 54 calls for the month. The Ambulance Corps normally meets on the 4th Wednesday of the month but during November and December it's the 2nd Wednesday. They also need volunteers and those interested can attend one of their meetings or call 845-526-3119.
Donning her other hat as the Town Assessor, Sheryl Keating brought to the public's attention that those involved in the Middle Class STAR program should have received their check by now. If not, or if property owners have questions, they can call the Assessor's office at Town Hall at 845-526-2517.
Ann Spoonhour spoke for the Putnam Valley Arts; she looked back on a successful summer season of fun, concerts and art shows, and looked forward to the upcoming Harvest Festival at Camp Combe on November 18. This was to be their last event of the year before they take a short break and begin planning the 2008 season. Each year they build upon the previous year's successes and always seem to come up with something new for the Putnam Valley residents to enjoy.
The Putnam Valley Library will start the holiday season off with "Gingerbread House Day" on November 28 between 4:30 and 5:30. Kids will let their imaginations soar and build their version of a Gingerbread House. All the fixings will be there to stimulate their imagination so they can emerge with a distinctive Gingerbread House.
On Saturday, December 1 the Library will host a puppet show, starting at 1pm.
For those looking for something to do in December, not too worry - it promises to be a busy month starting with the Putnam Valley Historical Society's annual Holiday Boutique on Saturday and Sunday December 1 and 2 at the Museum Schoolhouse between the hours of 10am and 4pm. Historical Society Director Lisa Delfino says the gifts they have for sale are different, For example, they have scented candles made from soy (they don't leave any black marks), or pure Maple Syrup and pure Honey, or any of dozens of homemade gifts and products.
Of course while that's going on the Scouts will be selling Christmas trees across the street at Adams Corners. The Hertzel family has not yet announced their tree-lighting ceremony but Jean Gallinger announced the Lake Peekskill "Meet Santa" party is scheduled for Saturday, December 15 between the hours of 1 and 3pm at the Lake Peekskill Community Center. It's open to all Putnam Valley residents and Sam Oliverio has promised a wide selection of donuts and munchkins.
Frank Cantatore and Sarina Russell took another step closer to realizing their dream of opening the Putnam Café and Bakery next to the Library, as the Town Board accepted their Performance Bond for the sewer connection. Their goal is to have the Café bakery open for the holidays.
Town Engineer Todd Atkinson brought up an MS-4 Phase One regulation that had been overlooked and now must be completed before the January 8, 2008 reporting period. The Board assured him they would make sure the work to be done is completed on time. Engineer Atkinson said we are now in Phase Five of the MS4 program (Stormwater Discharge from Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems). The annual report filed after January 8 summarizes the Town's efforts to prevent water contamination, detect sources of pollutants, correct problem situations, and educate the public on how they can help prevent water pollution. Failure to comply subjects the Town to penalties and fines.
Since there appears to be no adverse comments regarding the DGEIS (Draft Generic Environmental Impact Statement) Supervisor Sam Davis scheduled a meeting for Wednesday, November 28, 2007 for the Town Board to adopt the DGEIS.
