Haitian Festival To Benefit Educational Projects in Haiti
Piti, piti, wazo fe nich li. Little by little the bird builds its nest (Haitian proverb)
Zion Episcopal Church in Wappinger Falls will host a Weekend of Haiti on December 1 and 2, 2007. This Haitian festival features music, food, and a sale of more than 200 original Haitian paintings. All proceeds will support the scholarship program in Darbonne, Haiti and the building of a primary school in Chermaitre, Haiti.
Collaborating with Zion in this festival are local area churches, the Friends of Darbonne, and the Vassar Haiti Project.
"It is a great privilege to be working in partnership with such esteemed colleagues toward the realization of our joint dreams in Haiti." said Andrew Meade, founder and co-chair of the Vassar Haiti Project.
In addition to 200 paintings, the Haitian art sale will feature a wide assortment of items created by artists in Haiti, including silk scarves, iron sculptures, decorated boxes and figurines, jewelry, and unique gifts perfect for holiday shopping.
The weekend's event is a result of a partnership between various groups in Dutchess County. The Vassar Haiti Project and Trinity Fishkill Church are funding the construction of a primary school in the remote NW Haitian village of Chermaitre.
In addition, the Friends of Darbonne supports scholarships and various projects in Darbonne, Haiti. Zion and St. Andrews, Poughkeepsie have spearheaded this program for decades.
Items in the sale are traditionally Haitian and sure to inspire joy. Come also to be entertained by the local Haitian community and to sample authentic Haitian cuisine. All of the labor in this festival is given through the efforts of volunteers, so all the profits go directly towards the building of the new school and the scholarship program. All purchases are 50% tax deductible.
