Franciscan Friars of The Atonement Celebrate 25th Anniversary Of The Rule and Life of The Brothers and Sisters of The Third Order Regular of St. Francis Special mass to commemorate; public invited
Franciscan friars and sisters who pattern their lives and ministries on the Third Order Regular Rule will gather at Graymoor, home to the Franciscan Friars and Sisters of the Atonement, on Saturday, December 8, to mark the 25th anniversary of the promulgation of the revised Rule by the late Pope John Paul II.
V. Rev. James F. Puglisi, SA, minister general of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement, will preside at a special mass at 11am in Pilgrim Hall on Saturday, December 8th. The public is cordially invited to attend.
The original Rule, believed to have been composed by early followers of St. Francis of Assisi around 1289 and revised in 1521 and again in 1927, was updated by an international team of Franciscan women and men following what they described as "a massive collaborative effort" involving the more than four hundred congregations worldwide that comprise the Third Order Regular.
The revision was required by the Second Vatican Council which mandated all religious communities to examine their respective rules and constitutions and "re-appropriate" their original spirit and values.
The Franciscan Friars of the Atonement are a religious order of brothers and priests founded in 1898 by Father Paul Wattson. Their worldwide ministries include Christian unity; interfaith dialogue among Christians, Jews, Muslims, and Buddhists; serving the homeless and those suffering from alcoholism, drug addictions, and HIV/AIDS; preaching the gospel in parishes around the world, and offering respite and hope at their Spiritual Life Center to those in need of spiritual renewal.
