Our Village was Lucky to Have Sergeant Burris Dear Editor:
Last Thursday, fate dealt a terrible blow to our village with the tragic accident that claimed the life of Sergeant Darrell Burris. He was a good man that took his job, protecting the citizens of Cold Spring, very seriously. He raised the level of professionalism at our local precinct and always made himself available for any matter, big or small.
I had the good fortune on two occasions to interact with him. Last year, on one of the worst days of my life, when my five year old fell from the school monkey bars and broke his arm in two places, Officer Burris sat in the ambulance with us, offering kind, calming words, promising my son a visit to see Duncan the Police Dog. His presence was a comfort to a hysterical mother and child in agony. Recently, on a happier occasion, he was very helpful and accommodating to my husband and me when we needed to be fingerprinted for an adoption application.
My children also were thrilled when he and Duncan visited them at the Haldane School.
Living in a safe county, we sometimes take for granted the job that our police officers do. Our village was lucky to have him and he will be very difficult to replace. God bless his family in this time of great sorrow.
