Putnam Culinary Students Compete in Gingerbread House Contest

It takes houses to make the village BOCES Culinary Arts students are entering in the annual Gingerbread House Decorating Contest this week. Student builders include Chelsea Geyer (Mahopac), left, and Ashley Taylor (Putnam Valley).
The holidays are nearly upon us, and the Culinary Arts students of BOCES are busy working on an edible holiday art project - this one in the form of a gingerbread village. The young pastry chefs - who are competing in the professional category against entrants the likes of Blue Hill at Stone Barns, Zippo's, and the Riviera Bakery - are creating an entire gingerbread village to enter in the "Everything Magical" themed third-annual Gingerbread House Decorating Contest, which is part of the Festive Stroll of Homes, November 16 and 17, to benefit the Ossining Children's Center.

The Gingerbread House Competition has three categories for entry: Individual or Family, Groups (Scout troops, for example), and Professional Quality, such as the BOCES students. All gingerbread houses will be judged by pastry chefs on November 16 and auctioned off, with 100 percent of the profits from both the purchase of the kits and the sale of the houses going to Ossining Children's Center, a 100-yearold non-profit organization dedicated to providing quality daycare to children of all income levels.

Individuals or groups can purchase kits to make the gingerbread houses for $20 at Holbrook Cottage, 1253 Pleasantville Road, Briarcliff Manor, or by contacting Lynn Watson, at 762-2285. Completed houses should be returned to Ms. Watson at 284 Pine Road, Briarcliff Manor, by November 14 for judging.

The Festive Stroll of Homes includes four select Briarcliff Manor and Ossining homes, which will be decorated and open to stroll through from 10am to 12pm. and from 2:30- 4:30pm on Friday, November 16, and from 10am to 1pm and from 1 to 4pm on Saturday, November 17. The Stroll will be followed by a champagne reception at Holbrook Cottage and is available to anyone purchasing a $45 ticket. For $130, strollers are also treated to a luncheon at Trump National Gold Club, where the gingerbread houses will be on display and ultimately auctioned.
