BOCES Invites Career Changers to "Come Teach With Us"
BOCES once again invites people interested in changing careers, who have at least a bachelor's degree in science, math, or a language other than English, to an alternative teacher-certification program called the "Come Teach With Us" Academy. This program, which is a partnership of Pace University's School of Education and Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES, allows career changers or recent college graduates the chance to begin intensive teacher training in the spring and summer of 2008 and be eligible to apply for teaching positions as early as the fall of 2008.
The program came about in response to the need for teachers in the critical areas of math, science, and languages, because of the shortage of qualified teachers in these areas. The Academy program leads to an alternative certification for teaching in secondary math, science, and languages such as Spanish, French, Mandarin, and Italian. Candidates admitted into this program must have demonstrated excellence in their previous academic work.
"The Come Teach With Us program prepared me extremely well to be an educational professional," says Gerald Ardito, science teacher at Pierre Van Cortlandt Middle School in Croton. "I was able to translate the experience I brought from previous careers into the world of teaching. I can't imagine a better teacher preparation program."
Information sessions will be held on Wednesday, November 14, and on Monday, November 19, at 6pm at Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES in Yorktown Heights. Interested candidates should contact Carol Ross, coordinator of Come Teach With Us Academy, at (914) 248-2357, or email at cross@pnwboces.org, or call the Pace University Graduate Admission Office at (914) 422- 4283 or email at gradwp@pace.edu.
