Howland Public Library's Frank Rees Receives Outstanding Public Service Award
The Howland Public Library in Beacon, is pleased to announce that Frank Rees, Assistant Library Director & Adult Services Librarian, has won the New York Library Association/ Reference and Adult Services Section (RASS) Outstanding Public Service Award.
Since his arrival at the Howland Public Library in 2005, Frank Rees has made many contacts in the community who have brought their expertise and talents into the library for free adult programs. He has worked with Ginny Figlia, Howland's Youth Services Librarian, to provide programs that attract people of all ages, and encourage them to enjoy cultural events at the library together. He also helps Library Assistant Ai-Ping Ma with the library's popular monthly film series.
Some of the adult services instituted by Frank include computer basics and advanced classes for seniors and others using MSWord, etc. HPL recently loaned Frank's teaching skills and technological expertise to the Beacon Community Center. Frank has conducted programs on getting the most out of library databases (Chilton's automotive repair, etc.), and programs about free web services and downloads. Frank is a guest columnist for Poughkeepsie Journal "On the Shelves" book reviews and coordinates three library book clubs. He instituted a weekly "trivia" contest that stretched adult and student reference skills; and much more. In addition to his work in Adult Services, Frank Rees handles many technological and managerial responsibilities as the library's assistant director.
The NYLA/RASS Award for Outstanding Public Service helped make it possible for Frank Rees to attend the NYLA conference in Buffalo in October. At the conference, Frank presented a well-received program with Rebekkah Smith- Aldrich of the Mid-Hudson Library System on Web 2.0 Applications for Library Managers. After the conference, he was asked to serve on the NYLA/RASS board in 2008.
Frank Rees has made a major difference to the Howland Public Library, to the Beacon City School District community, and to the New York State library community. The Howland Public Library Board, Director, and Staff are delighted to see Frank Rees' contributions recognized.
