Local Band The Veltz Family Organizes Songwriter Showcase Nights in Cold Spring

From left: Allison Veltz, Drew Veltz, Laura Veltz, Ken & Jeannie Veltz.
The story of The Veltz Family, former Atlantic Records recording artists and national touring band, is now being told and lived out on Main Street in Cold Spring. This real family of musicians has been setting their art, love & life to music. The family made the decision to leave New York City in the spring of 2005 after the oldest son Drew made the announcement that he and his wife were expecting; a plan was developed to migrate, somewhere along the Hudson, with Metro North accessibility to New York City.

This past summer, middle daughter Laura and fiancé Adam were the first to stumble onto Cold Spring. Totally taken by the town's vibe, the two moved to Main Street. Not long after, Jeannie and Ken (mom and dad) came to visit their daughter. They had lunch at a local restaurant, met some Cold Spring residents and secured housing that day, deciding to make the move as well. Allison (youngest) was the last to leave the city but was slowly charmed by the town through visits to sis and parents, quickly finding housing as well. Oldest brother Drew and family moved from the city to Sleepy Hollow, NY but have plans to join the rest of the family here in Cold Spring early next year.

The family's original goal was to find a locale suitable to raise children but also a practical location to tour out of, supporting their ongoing musical endeavors. The Veltz's were looking at the town primarily as a safe environment with scenic views, excellent access to the city and great antiquing opportunities, but they soon realized Cold Spring is so much more. "The surprise was discovering the ever-unfolding wealth of talented artists of every kind here in Cold Spring, and being graciously welcomed into that community is an honor that has made Cold Spring a profoundly perfect place for us to settle." said Ken.

In less than half a year, The Veltz Family's music has found its way into the hearts and minds of many Cold Spring residents and their zeal for the arts has been a catalyst to get people together around music, songwriting and creativity. They have been performing at The Silver Spoon Cafe on Main Street on Saturday nights to an enthusiastic ever-growing crowd. They have also shared their musical talents at the benefit concert for Olivia Bean at The Foundry and at The Hudson House last week to benefit P.A.R.C.

Their sound and style is reminiscent of many of the late 60's, early 70's pop bands like, "The Mamas and the Papas", "Fleetwood Mac" and others where harmony, storytelling and songwriting is the cornerstone of the music.

If you haven't experienced The Veltz Family's music live, there are a number of opportunities to do so coming up.

This December, the family will be hosting and performing at a new local songwriter showcase night, featuring many talented Cold Spring and regional artists. "The Listening Room at The Depot" will be a refreshing and creative night of entertainment, held on Thursdays at Cold Spring Depot Restaurant, beginning next Thursday, December 6 at 7pm. There's no cover charge. They will also be performing at The Depot Theater in Garrison on January 25, 2008.

As newcomers to the area, the Veltz family was captured by the charm and beauty of Cold Spring. They have even written a new song entitled, "On Main Street In Cold Spring" that they perform on a semi-regular basis at shows.
