Westchester Choral Society Presents Sing-In of Handel's Messiah

The award-winning Westchester Choral Society invites all to a Sing-In of Handel's Messiah on Sunday, December 9, at 3pm at the Music Conservatory of Westchester, 216 Central Avenue in White Plains (near the County Center). Music director Frank Nemhauser will conduct, and Larchmont resident David Baranowski will be the accompanist. Singers will have an opportunity to join in both solo and choral selections, and listeners are welcome.

Tickets for the December 9 event are $10 and include refreshments and use of a score. Free parking is available, and the Conservatory is fully accessible. For further information, contact WCS Administrator Katie Goulart at 914-761- 3900 ext. 103 or go to www.westchesterchoralsociety.org.

Founded by Sarah Stewart Bowne in 1942 to perform Bach's B minor Mass with 15 singers, WCS is celebrating its 65th birthday but has no intentions of retiring. WCS invites singers in all voice sections to join the chorus for the remainder of the 2007-08 season. The Choral Society's music director, Frank Nemhauser, will conduct auditions for prospective members at the Music Conservatory of Westchester, 216 Central Avenue in White Plains (near the County Center), where the chorus is in residence, in January 2008. Interested singers may also opt for a free trial membership before they schedule an audition. Rehearsals are held at the Conservatory on Tuesday evenings from 7:30-10pm.

Nemhauser is Music Director of the Berkshire Choral Festival and Associate Dean at Mannes College of Music. Born in New York City, Nemhauser grew up in Croton. Regarding the audition process, Nemhauser says, "I am looking for quality of voice and the ability to read music/learn music. I would like to stress that the audition procedure will be short and I am extremely kind during auditions."

In addition to an All-American program on December 2 and the Sing-In of Messiah on December 9, the season includes a concert of Johannes Brahms' Liebeslieder Waltzes, Nänie, and Deutsche Volkslieder on Sunday, May 18, 2008, at 3pm at Rye Presbyterian Church, 882 Boston Post Road, Rye.

For further information about the upcoming events or the free trial membership,or to schedule a singer-friendly audition, contact WCS Administrator Katie Goulart at 914-761-3900 ext. 103 or go to www.westchesterchoralsociety.org.
