U.S. Rep. John Hall Establishes Service Academy Review Board Board will decide on military service academy nominations for students in 19th District; Philipstown's Andrew Chmar one of 14 board members appointed
Representative John Hall (D-NY19) recently announced the creation of his Review Board to nominate students in the 19th Congressional District for admission into one of the four United States military service academies.
"Admission into our nation's service academies is always very competitive," added Hall. "But it is my hope that the people my board nominates will be accepted to an academy and have the chance to pursue their goals of attaining a worldclass education while making a commitment to serve our country."
Application for admission into a military service academy is different from that of a normal college application process. To be considered for admission into the Air Force Academy, United States Military Academy, Naval Academy, or Merchant Marine Academy, students must first be nominated by either a member of the House of Representatives or a U.S. Senator. House Members nominate individuals in their Congressional district, while Senators can make nominations from throughout their home state. Congressman Hall established his Service Academy Review Board to help evaluate applicants before making nominations. Applicants can seek a nomination from both their Senators and their Member of Congress.
"There are many highly qualified and impressive young candidates in our district who submit applications for a service academy nomination," said Hall. "I'm confident that the Review Board I've set up will be well-equipped to evaluate which individuals should be nominated for further admissions consideration."
Congressman Hall opened the Board's kick-off meeting held November 17 in Castle Point, New York by thanking Board members for their assistance in selecting the top candidates.
Hall has chosen 14 members to serve on his Service Academy Review Board, including Andrew T. Chmar, of Cold Spring. Chmar's public service includes an extensive career as an officer in the United States. He has also worked in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, and Singapore. Chmar earned an Engineering Degree from the United States Military Academy, and has taught at West Point as an Assistant Professor.
