Putnam County Health Department Honors National Home Care Month
In honor of the nation's home care professionals and support team, the Putnam County Department of Health is celebrating National Home Care Month. The month-long celebration pays tribute to the dedicated Home Care professionals who enable elderly, disabled, and chronically ill individuals to live their lives where they want to most - in their own homes.
As America's elderly population continues to grow, home health care will play a pivotal role in health care delivery in the 21st century and beyond. Studies and common sense have shown that given a choice, the vast majority of people faced with disability or illness would prefer to remain at home instead of in a hospital or institution. Home care professionals provide high quality health care and the close, personal contact that allows that to happen. Often times, home care is provided following a hospitalization. Experienced registered nurses provide physical assessment, perform skilled nursing care and medical treatments prescribed by the client's primary care physician and teach management of disease process and medications to clients and caregivers. In addition, their experienced team of physical, speech, and occupational therapists are available to perform comprehensive evaluations and provide a rehab program tailored to a client's individual needs at home, such as following a stroke. Social workers can assist clients with long term planning, finances, housing, and make referrals to other community resources. Finally, home health aides provide their clients with assistance with personal care, exercise programs, and other tasks.
In addition to recognizing the work of home care providers, National Home Care Month serves to educate the public about issues affecting home care and the home care services available in their local communities. The Putnam County Health Department's Home Care team assists Putnam residents in remaining in their homes for as long as it is feasible and safe. The Putnam County Health Department continually reaches out to the medically underserved and high-risk populations in our community.
Compassionate, skilled and caring are only a few words that describe the services of the Health Department Home Care Team. The Putnam County Legislature, in conjunction with County Executive Robert Bondi, signed a proclamation in recognition of National Home Care Month on Wednesday, November 7, 2007.
