| The Hudson Highlands Land Trust and Teatown Lake Reservation teamed up on Saturday, November 10 at The Garrison to present Choices for Sustainable Living: You Can Do It! an expo featuring exhibits of green products and technologies and practical workshops on how to embrace a more sustainable lifestyle. The Expo was attended by more than 350 adults and children.
Two dozen exhibitors provided information and displayed products designed to boost the "green" component in daily living. Construction materials, alternative ways to insulate, heat and cool houses, gardening, recycling- even eating- were some of the subjects covered. Breakout workshops included expert-led discussions like "This Old House Wants to Be Green" on retrofitting your home with sustainable technology and "How Green is Your Lawn?" on ecofriendly lawn care offered practical in-depth information.
Two more workshops, "Going Green as a Family," and "Green Teen Consultants: Saving the World One Business at a Time," offered subject matter for all ages. A fourth offering "Eco-Art Workshop," kept young participants busy during the keynote address. In the afternoon, attendees were invited to visit four local homes to see how green technologies and practices actually work. The Garrison generously hosted the event with support provided by Turner Construction Company.
In their talk, actor Chevy Chase and his wife Jayni Chase shared no-nonsense advice on how each of us can make our homes, and our lives, "greener." The Chases' light and lively address focused on the importance of environmental education for children, activism, and how making simple, no-nonsense choices can and will contribute to a sustainable planet. They stressed that each effort, no matter how small, would make a difference. Chevy and Jayni Chase, long-time environmental advocates, are the founders of The Center for Environmental Education Online, a resource for educators, students and parents on information including global warming, sustainable living, healthy foods in schools, and more.
If you were unable to attend or want more information regarding any of the Expo topics or participants, the Land Trust has set up a dedicated webpage for Sustainability at www.hhlt.org/Expo. You'll find links to the vendors, as well as other useful content from the event.
