Paving Old Albany Post Road Would be a Travesty
Dear Editor,

It would be a travesty to pave any section of Old Albany Post Road.

I passionately support the letter sent two weeks ago by David Thornquist. He was wellinformed and comprehensive. Pave Old Albany Post Road? What's happening to our historic heritage in Philipstown? Are we selling out to the downstate "Barbie" houses and make everything asphalt. I grew up in "Asphalt Jungle" and 20 years ago I came to Garrison for its' dirt roads and lifestyle. We are not a bedroom community, and I wish for all time to come, that we never will be.

David rightly criticizes a oneperson decision maker, Mr. Chirico, who has sole discretion as Highway Superintendent to decide whether to pave. I remember when some "smart" town official decided to pave Canopus Hill Road and lots of us were not very happy about such "modernization." I drive a portion of Old Albany Post Road every weekday and despite the potholes (after a rain), I feel serene. To think, I'm driving on the road George Washington traversed.

This is plain and simple an outrage and, I'll add one more thing: Let's put a moratorium on any new building in Philipstown- Keep our special place special. Hats off to David's letter and David, my 600-foot double "S" driveway will NEVER be paved, even though my car needs a little push when the surface is dry.

Sid Gibson
