PVES Sponsors School-Wide Thanksgiving Food Drive

Putnam Valley Elementary School (PVES) has completed its second annual school-wide "Celebration of Caring, Sharing, and Giving." This program was conceived by school leaders- Principal Jamie Edelman, Assistant Principal Louise Frangella, and the two school psychologists, Rosa Amendola and Sue O'Connell, in association with the Putnam Valley PTA's Character Education Committee- who invited PVES families to join in a project to create more than thirty dinners that will be distributed to local families in need. All students were asked to contribute one item from a menu, with collection taking place from November 12 through November 16. On the 16th classes were invited into the school's foyer to see the results of their hard work, and these results were impressive.

Other related activities that further extended the ideas of Caring, Sharing, and Giving included making Thanksgiving cards to include in the food boxes and having class conversations about this project to offer students an opportunity to make personal connections. Children were also encouraged to decorate their food boxes in order to make the presentations special.

All five grades from kindergarten through fourth participated, along with PVES staff members, who donated their own money to purchase gift certificates for turkeys. All food is being donated to the Putnam Valley Food Pantry.
