Putnam Valley Elementary School Third Graders Receive Dictionaries Courtesy of P.V. Rotary

Gabriel Heady from Mrs. Mistretta's class shakes hands with Rotary Club representative Carl Sandberg after receiving his dictionary.
Putnam Valley Elementary School (PVES) third graders had something brand new to be thankful for as the holiday season rolled out this month. They received a special visit on November 19 from members of the Putnam Valley Rotary Club, who arrived with cartons full of dictionaries to present to each student.

The Rotary representatives were President Robert Walker, Vice President Ira Levine, and active members Carl Sandberg, Agnes Legrady, and Rita Sharples. In addition to the Rotarians, Putnam Valley Superintendent of Schools Dr. Marc Space (also a Rotarian), Assistant Superintendent Dr. Barbara Fuchs, PVES Principal Jamie Edelman, and PVES Assistant Principal Louise Frangella were in attendance, along with a room full of happy third grade students and their teachers.

Following a few informal remarks the children lined up to receive their books from Mr. Walker and shake hands with all of the Rotary representatives. Cheerful "thank yous" accompanied the handshakes. Following the presentation Dr. Space gave a short address on the importance of reading in our lives.

This is the third year that the PV Rotary has visited both the PV Elementary and Middle schools with book donations. This program is the brainchild of Mr. Walker, who explained that a good friend of his who was the president of the Jersey City Rotary organization, had overseen Rotary dictionary distributions to Jersey City third graders for a number of years.
