BOCES' Mobile Computers Aid Staff Development
 | | P/NW BOCES consultant and curriculum developer Mirla Morrison (right) takes second grade teachers through an Integrated Social Studies/ELA lesson using BOCES' new laptops. Technology is infused in this newly developed grade 1 - 5 curriculum being used by numerous schools in the area, as well as farther afield - from Ballston Spa to Valley Stream. |
| Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES, already a mecca for area educators seeking to augment their skills, now has a new feature - mobile carts with laptop computers for use by workshop attendees.
The more than 30 computers are not only convenient (they can be set up in BOCES' main conference rooms rather than asking teachers to travel to and from computer labs located in other buildings), they are also a key instructional ingredient in many curriculum projects that integrate technology.
For example, over the past few years, teachers from the Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES region have developed an Integrated Social Studies/ English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum that is web based. The comprehensive first through fifth grade units are multifaceted - combining primary source documents, SmartBoard applications, links to web pages and video clips, guided reading suggestions, and more. Support for teachers, provided by P/NW BOCES' Curriculum Center, occurs each fall on BOCES' Yorktown campus and the laptops play an integral part in the training. Teachers can practice what they will be asking their students to do in both English and social studies as the school year progresses.
The laptops have also been used for staff development for school district support staff and for BOCES teachers and employees as well.
