Garrison Colonial Cottage Featuring Work of Local Artisans Highlighted in This Old House Magazine Article Decorative painters English & Harms and architectural woodright Vasquez's work is the focus
A Garrison home that spotlights the work of local artisans is featured in the December issue of This Old House magazine. An editor from This Old House contacted decorative painter Susan English this past summer for an article on color, and when Susan gave the editor a tour of several homes that she and her partner John Harms had worked on in the Philipstown area, the editor fell in love with the Garrison home and decided to use it as a feature article.
The article, A Starter House describes the home as built for newlyweds in 1795 with simple materials and the expectation of a short lifespan. The fact that it stands today is a testament to both the current owner's love of the house and the talented group of artisans he worked with to restore it.
Chris Vasquez of Architectural Woodwright did the structural renovations and many interior embellishments. Among other things, he created mahogany screen doors and milled salvage boards to restore a porch deck.
English & Harms Specialty Painting, a husband and wife team of decorative painters based in Philipstown, worked on the interior of the house over a nine-year period. They collaborated with the owner to create decorative finishes for walls and trim and a palette of colors that are both beautiful and have an authentic feel. They also restored an existing mural and recreated it an adjacent room.
A second article in the December edition, entitled Color by Number, features an interview with Susan English relating to the use of color in various rooms of a home.
