Nursery School in PV Provides Needed Services to Parents
by Edward Paul Greiff

Dorothy Ross, owner and Director of Pine grove Children's Nursery
For the past eight years Dorothy Ross and her Pine Grove Children's Nursery on Peekskill Hollow Road have been providing a much-needed service to the working parents of Putnam Valley. The parents who entrust their children to Pine Grove (or any nursery school for that matter) know the pain of dropping a child off in the morning and the happiness of picking them up at the end of the day and seeing a smile on their face because they had a good time while at school.

It's heart-wrenching when you see a parent drop off their little one and he or she is crying with separation anxiety. But the parent confidently leaves and one of the twenty teachers at the school takes the child in hand and within ten minutes the child is laughing, singing, and playing with the other children in their class. As much as a child can weaken an adult with a big wide-eyed glance, they can also cheer you up with their uncontrollable giggles and laughter, that's what makes them so wonderful to work with.

The child is now engaged in a positive life experience that will aid them in their future years of interacting with other people. In their own way, Ross and her staff are preparing these fortunate children with social interaction skills that will serve them in the future.

Dorothy has been running Pine Grove Nursery in Putnam Valley for the past eight years and her sister has been running a similar operation in Mahopac for the past twenty-eight.

All you have to do is read some of the letters that parents send to Ms. Ross to realize how important this service is to the parents and the Town in general: "Dear Dorothy: Thank you for the love and caring environment you have provided for my son and daughter... I cannot tell you how much this means to me, a single working mom trying to make ends meet...".

The Nursery School takes children from two and a half up to ten years of age. Ross says, "I would like to think we are about helping kids, not about making money and because of that we will try to help parents as much as we can." But her school is also caught up in the high tax burden and continuing increase in the cost of doing business.

"When we started, things were much simpler," says Ms. Ross, "but now there are many more rules and regulations that need to be followed. I'm sure they have some good reason for implementing them because of incidents that have happened elsewhere. We don't have any problems and I have a great staff. Many of them have been with me since we started. They love it and the kids love them."

Most parents agree that if they can provide their children with a positive nursery school experience the child is better prepared for elementary school. They all agree on the relief and gratitude they have knowing their child is being well cared for; it enables them to perform at their own job.

Dorothy Ross' business is an example of the type of sustainable commercial development the Comprehensive Master Plan is talking about. It fulfills a need the surrounding community has requested without having a negative affect on the Town's infrastructure. It compliments but does not replace similar services being provided by the Putnam Valley school system and the Town's Parks & Recreation after school program... It's child care services have become an integral part of the community just as the Ambulance Corps and Fire Department the Town could not exist without these services or to say the least it would be extremely difficult.
