The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor Commemorates Pearl Harbor Day

If you were alive on December 7, 1942, you no doubt recall where you were and what you were doing when you heard the news that continues to "live in infamy." On Friday, December 7, Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor will mark the anniversary of the devastating Japanese attack on America's shores that drew the nation to war, and millions of Americans into combat, with video presentations of the events of Pearl Harbor and remarks by some of the veterans of World War Two who have been interviewed in the Hall of Honor's oral history project. Admission is free. For more information, please call (845) 561-1765.

In the first year of its operation, the Hall of Honor has conducted dozens of video interviews with Purple Heart recipients, including several with people who entered the armed forces in response to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Excerpts from their interviews- as interviewees recall hearing of the attack, or seeing its devastation afterwards- will be shown periodically throughout the day, between 10am and 4:30pm on Friday, December 7. Also to be shown is the Hall of Honor's own film, For Military Merit. Created for the Hall of Honor by ABC News Productions, this 18-minute film tells the story of the Purple Heart medal and its precursor, George Washington's Badge of Military Merit.

The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor is located at New Windsor Cantonment State Historic Site, 374 Temple Hill Road (Route 300), in the town of New Windsor, NY. It is open Monday through Saturday, 10am to 5pm, Sunday 1- 5pm. Admission is free. For more information call (845) 561- 1765 or visit www.thepurpleheart.com
