"Santa's Helpers" at Hudson Valley Hospital Make Sure Presents are Under the Tree for Needy Children Each Year
John Federspiel, President of Hudson Valley Hospital Center, doesn't look like Santa Claus. He's thin and trim and dresses in business attire, not a red suit. But this year he's assumed the part of St. Nick. He's going shopping for $100 worth of presents for a local child in need as part of the hospital's "Santa's Helper" program, which will make sure there are presents under the trees for 100 children this year. Each child has written a Christmas "wish list" for the hospital's Santas. Most ask for necessities, such as warm socks and coats, which shows how basic their needs are.
About 40 additional Hudson Valley Hospital employees will be helping Santa this year by shopping for the children. Many hospital employees, from physicians and nurses to clerical staff and volunteers contribute to this effort through contributions, shopping, or wrapping presents. So far, nearly $10,000 has been raised. Each child receives $100 worth of presents. (Many live in group homes and would receive little otherwise.)
