Multiple Charges Filed Against Poughkeepsie Teen for Cold Spring Store Theft
Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith has reported the arrest of a 17-year-old Poughkeepsie youth following an investigation into the theft of alcoholic beverages from a Cold Spring grocery store.
According to the Sheriff, on November 18, 2007 at about 2:30pm Deputy Sheriff James Babcock responded to the Foodtown Market on Chestnut St. in Cold Spring for a report that a male youth had stolen a 30 pack of beer from the store and fled on foot after being confronted by store employees. The deputy obtained a description of the subject and began a check of the area. A short time later the subject was located walking along the roadway and was detained by the deputy.
During the course of the subsequent investigation into the incident the subject provided the deputy with false information as to his identity and age. With the assistance of the City of Beacon and City of Poughkeepsie Police Departments the subject was positively identified through prior police contact and arrest records. The suspect continued to provide false identity information and signed several law enforcement documents using the falsified information.
After a fingerprint check confirmed the subject's identity as the identity provided by the other police agencies, additional criminal charges were lodged by the deputy against the suspect.
The youth was charged with 4 misdemeanor counts of False Personation, Offering a False Instrument for Filing, Obstructing Governmental Administration in the 2nd Degree and Petit Larceny. The defendant was arraigned Before Judge Costello of The Village of Cold Spring Court and released pending future court appearances.
