Rewriting Philipstown's Zoning Code Dear Editor:
These are my personal observations derived from years of attending Town Board, Planning Board, Zoning Board and Conservation Advisory meetings. Community members, who take the time or are obligated to attend any of these meetings in an effort to protect their property, appear to voice the same concern: "our present zoning codes are not protecting my property rights". Residents expect these boards to wield their power, and the world will be made as it should be.
What residents fail to understand is that these boards are limited as to what actions they can take due to what the Town and State Codes allow. The town has taken the time (five years) to create the "Comprehensive Plan" and is now in the process of revising the town zoning code. Joel Russell, who helped establish the Comprehensive Plan, is leading this effort. If you as a citizen are frustrated by the current zoning codes, I urge you to attend these public meetings. If you wait until the zoning changes are made and presented to the public it may be too late to change the course of direction.
In December there are three zoning review meetings which will take place at the Glynwood Center. The meetings will take place on December 6, 11 and 19, from 5-7pm. For further information go to www.Philipstown.com
Time is precious but a few hours of your time today can help ensure the natural beauty of Philipstown for future generations.
