Diary of Anne Frank is PVHS TheatreWorks Fall Drama

This renowned work for the stage was adapted from Anne Frank's diary. In Nazi-occupied Holland, Otto Frank and his family have decided to go into hiding because of the increasing persecutions against Jews. The businessman Kraler and his assistant Miep prepare a hiding place in the rooms above their place of business and arrange for the Franks and another family, the Van Daans, to stay there. Later on, they are joined by the dentist Dussel. Together, they try to avoid detection while hoping for Holland to be liberated by the Allied Forces. But as time would prove, even meeting basic needs become a challenge, and minor incidents could present grave risk. Over more than two years, Anne writes in her diary, detailing her feelings, fears and relationships with the other dwellers. Although it is first and foremost a heartwrenching saga of a family's desperate quest for survival against horrific odds, it is also the poignant, first-hand story of a young girl's coming of age. While the content of the play is historically accurate, the subject matter may be disconcerting for very young audiences.

This production is the culmination of several months of Holocaust-related activities in the Putnam Valley Central School District, including the moving and educational exhibit from the Anne Frank Center, which was presented to students and to the community at large for two evenings in October, and the free screening of the documentary film Paper Clips, about a school in Tennessee that constructed a Holocaust memorial out of paper clips, each one representing a life lost.

The cast includes Stephanie Stoisits, Matt Sharison,Maggie McCarthy, Margot Frank, Jenna Isabella, Hannah Schmidt, Jim Hertzel, Mike Byrne, Kristen Ricci, Jackson Gilman-Forlini, Joe Rao, Robby Schmidt, Hudson Smith and Kevin VanDevelde
