Putnam Community Action Program Needs Help in Toy Drive
Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith requests the assistance of the citizens of Putnam County in supporting the Putnam Community Action Program Annual Toy Drive which is currently underway in its 41st consecutive year. As in the past, the Putnam County Sheriff's Department's Cadets are assisting with the collection of the donated toys for needy children in Putnam County.
The Cadets help collect and sort donated toys and gifts for delivery to underprivileged youngsters throughout Putnam County during Christmas and Hanukah holidays. Last year through the generosity of donors and the efforts of the Cadets and other volunteers and cooperating agencies, over 3,000 toys and gifts were distributed to some 893 children, giving them a brighter and happier holiday season.
The program is seeking donations of new, unwrapped toys or gifts for children between the ages of newborn and 18 years of age. Donors are invited to drop off items at the Sheriff's Office headquarters located off Fair Street in Carmel, Toys for Tots drop-off locations, at the Town of Kent Police Department, located on Route 52 in Kent or at the Community Action Program Headquarters located at 121 Main Street in Brewster. Donations should be dropped off as soon as possible, but no later than December 20, 2007 to insure delivery to the children in time for the holidays.
Rosemarie Bahr, the Executive Director of the Community Action Program has expressed concern that the needs for the county as a whole are greater than ever before and that it will take a tremendous effort on the part of the citizens of Putnam County to achieve the goal of providing three gifts for each eligible individual in the program. Ms. Bahr expressed special concern for children in the 12 to 18 year-old category and suggested gift cards from stores such as Best Buy, Old Navy and Kohl's for the holiday program.
Speaking on behalf of the Sheriff's Cadets Program, Sheriff Smith expressed his gratitude to citizens for their compassion, humanity and generosity in past toy drives and asked for their continued support in this year's program.
For more information on the annual toy drive, please check the Putnam Community Action website at www.putnamcap.org or telephone Ms. Rosemarie Bahr at 845-278-8021, extension 17. The website contains information on the types of gifts that are most needed in order to meet the needs of Putnam County's children. Tax deductible monetary donations are also welcome and may be made via the website or by check made out to "Putnam Community Action Program" which will allow the Community Action Program staff to purchase needed toys for Putnam's children.
