Matt Pergamo Wins Putnam County Voice of Democracy Contest
Matt Pergamo won first place in the Putnam County Voice of Democracy (VOD) annual Scholarship Competition. The Scholarship competition, sponsored, by The Cold Spring VFW Post 2362 offers a total of $146,000 at various levels from local posts districts state and finally national where the winner is awarded $30,000. This topic for this years competition was " My Role in Honoring American Veterans." Candidates first wrote an essay on this topic and then, with the help of Randy Turner from WHUD, made a CD, timed from three to five minutes.
For the past several years the VFW has been disappointed in the number of students participating in this competition. The VOD committee met with administration and teachers from the junior and senior classes. There are presently approximately 150 students in these two classes. Matt Pergamo, inspired by his parents and Phil Schatzle, Commander of the VFW, was the only candidate from Haldane. The competition was also open to students attending schools other than Haldane.
Since Matt won at the Putnam County level and represented Cold Spring VFW Post 2362, he will be financially rewarded by the organizations representing these two levels. The next level is the District, composed of ten counties in the lower Hudson Valley. VFW Post 2362 are hoping that Matt's CD continues its success and it ends up as the state's and national top entry also. They offer their congratulations to Matt for doing a great job.
