PVHS and PVMS Collaborate to Provide Tutoring Opportunities

Putnam Valley Middle School (PVMS) and Putnam Valley High School (PVHS) are proud to announce two more projects in a growing series of academic collaborations.

The first, called AIFA (Academic Intervention for Athletes) is the brainchild of longtime PVHS lacrosse coach and Science teacher, Brian Kuczma, who, as part of an administrative internship, is working with PVMS Assistant Principal Dr. David Fine on a program for modified level athletes who have indicated a need for tutoring help with some of their academic workload.

Varsity athletes will be invited to provide tutoring for these Modified players (players in the same sports), with the goal of increasing classroom performance while strengthening the relationships between Modified and Varsity athletes in the same programs. Mr. Kuczma remarked, "These tutoring sessions will hopefully provide a foundation of learning that will carry over into the demanding realm of high school academics and athletics."

The second program is a morning tutoring opportunity available to Middle School students and is provided by 7-8 PVHS juniors and seniors who have their first or second periods of the day free. The high school students indicate the subject in which they feel comfortable offering assistance, and are paired with one or two PVMS students who need academic assistance. The Guidance departments of both schools help with recommendation and implementation of the tutoring, and parental permission is required for all participants. The students began meeting for their tutoring sessions in the PVMS Library in November.

Additionally, Dr. Fine and PVHS Social Studies teacher Ed Schmitt, who is very involved in a number of volunteer academic opportunities for PVHS students, are in the process of designing an afternoon program similar in nature, using PVHS students who are potential candidates for the National Honor Society, of which Mr. Schmitt is the Advisor.
