Bring the Kids Family Concert Performed by Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra

The Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Woomyung Choe, presents a packed concert for the entire family on Sunday, January 13, 2008 at 3pm in the Newburgh Free Academy High School Auditorium, 201 Fullerton Ave., Newburgh.

Bring the kids for a delightful afternoon of music that will appeal to one and all with musicologist Peter Muir as commentator. Featured are percussionist Christopher Clarino, an 18-year-old Newburgh native, performing Mackey's Concerto for Solo Percussion with Orchestra and international pianist and recording artist Peter Muir performing Rhapsody in Blue for Piano and Orchestra. This concert, along with the entire GNSO season, is dedicated to Founding President George Handler. The snow date is Sunday, January 20 at 3pm.

The program begins with the William Tell Overture by Gioacchino Rossini (1792- 1868), whose operas were filled with treasures that rank among the finest creations of the Italian musical theater.

Christopher Clarino, who began his music studies at six, is a freshman at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, pursuing a double major in Percussion and Piano. He was selected to participate in the NYSSMA All-State Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Choir and Jazz Band, performed as xylophone and marimba soloist with the USMA Concert Band and received a scholarship to attend the 2006 Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Austin, TX. Chris currently studies piano with Tony Caramia and percussion with John Beck, former president of the national Percussive Arts Society and host of the first PAS International Convention. Added to his instrumental talents, Christopher is an accomplished vocalist, conductor and dancer.

Peter Muir is a versatile international pianist and recording artist. His recent appearances in America include the Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival and the W. C. Handy Festival at City University of New York. Concerts and broadcasts abroad include appearances in Hong Kong, Australia, and Britain. In addition, he has accompanied, among many others, British tenor Ian Bostridge and soprano Susan Burghardt and has a unique talent for creating improvised music tracks for silent movies, which he most recently did for the Australian National Sound and Screen Archive.

Concluding GNSO's presentation is the beautiful, traditional Christmas ballet, The Nutcracker Suite, Opus 71, by the beloved "Master of Melody," Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893). The tale by Hoffmann is performed literally thousands of times each season, and the Orchestra will play selections from this story about Clara and her favorite Christmas present- the nutcracker.

The Shacklett Preview at 2pm is a pre-concert introduction to the music by Gordon Shacklett. Ticket prices are $25 for reserved seating, $20 for general admission, $15 for seniors, $10 for students, and children under seven are admitted free of charge. Tickets may be purchased at the door or reserved.
