Hudson Highlands Land Trust Welcomes New Director Of Land Preservation
Katrina Shindledecker, formerly of NY State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, is appointed

"Katrina brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the position of Director of Land Preservation that will be invaluable during this critical period of growth in the region." observed Andy Chmar, HHLT's Executive Director, "In this position, she will serve as a critical connection between the land trust and property owners, as well as a resource to residents within the HHLT service area, while also supporting the Highland's municipalities in their work to safeguard our quality of life." Katrina succeeds Marlo Kovacs, who is relocating with her family to the Buffalo, NY area.

Katrina joins the Land Trust after a number of years working for the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (NYS OPRHP). While working for NYS OPRHP she acted as Community Liaison/Natural Resource Manager at the Rockefeller State Park Preserve in Mount Pleasant, New York and as an Environmental Planner/ Stewardship Coordinator for the Taconic Region.

While working on her M.S. thesis in Environmental Policy from Bard College entitled "Land Acquisition, Easements and Sales: Policies and Practices of Land Trusts in the Hudson Valley" Katrina was first acquainted with the work of HHLT. Katrina also earned a M.S. in Environmental Science from Pace University in 2003 and received her B.S. from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida.

"The Director of Land Preservation is a crucial member of the Land Trust team," noted Lars Kulleseid, HHLT Board member and chair of the Land Conservation Committee. "Katrina's role will be to monitor easements for compliance and assist in easement development, outreach, and public policy work. The Land Trust and the community at large will benefit significantly from her experience and knowledge in the area of land stewardship."

"I look forward to building personal relationships with the residents of HHLT's mission area as I work with conservation easement donors and become more involved in land conservation public policy and public outreach work here," remarked Katrina. "I couldn't be happier to join HHLT, with its invaluable mission to protect open space and preserve the special, rural character of the Hudson Highlands." Katrina is married to John Middlebrooks, who is the Executive Director of the Rensselaer Land Trust. They reside in Germantown, NY.

The Hudson Highlands Land Trust seeks to protect the special character of the Highlands through land conservation, advocacy, and the promotion of sound long-term planning. HHLT works with landowners and groups of neighbors, who are interested in preserving their property for future generations, provides information about our area's wonderful natural resources, draws attention to the high costs of shortsighted development, and helps organize events such as the Take-a-Hike! Program, Choices for Sustainability Expo, and annual Family BBQ, Square Dance & Campout. For more information, please visit www.hhlt.org or call 424-3358.
