Two Teens Hospitalized After Falling Through Ice on Tonetta Lake
Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports that two eighteen-year-old boys have been hospitalized after plunging through the ice on Tonetta Lake in Brewster on December 11. A sheriff 's deputy and a pair of good Samaritans are credited with the teenagers' rescue.
At about 1:28pm, a resident of Lakeside Road called 911 and reported seeing the youths in the water. The 911 operator dispatched police, fire and ambulance services to the scene.
Sheriff 's Deputy Andrew Kristan was the first emergency responder to arrive. He saw the two victims floundering in the icy water, some 25-30 feet out from shore and roughly midway between the points where Lakeside Road and Shore Drive abut the lake. The deputy commandeered a beached row boat from the nearby Tonetta Lake Town Park and with the help of two bystanders, Mr. Lou Caldarola of Coolidge Drive in Brewster and Mr. Michael Kelly, a NYSEG employee who was working nearby, the boat was used to pull the youths from the water.
State troopers, members of the Brewster Volunteer Fire Department, Brewster Ambulance Corps personnel and an Empire Ambulance paramedic also responded to the scene to assist in the rescue and to aid the victims. The Brewster Ambulance Corps rushed the youths to Danbury Hospital, where they were listed in "stable" condition as of the time of this News Release. The victims have been identified as Mr. Carlos Martinez, of 265 Tonetta Lake Road, Brewster, and Mr. Raymond Cafiero, of 12 Pump House Road, Brewster.
Preliminarily, it is reported that the two young men were idling about together along the shore when Mr. Martinez stepped out onto the frozen surface of the lake. The ice proved too thin, however, and broke under Mr. Martinez's weight. When Mr. Cafiero went onto the ice to help his companion, he too fell into the water.
