Builders Association of Hudson Valley's Book Drive Tops Goal
 | | The sdHoliday Party Committee displays some of the books donated for the 2007 Builders Building Literacy children's book drive. |
| It was another record-breaking year for donations of children's books for the Builders Association of the Hudson Valley's Builders Building Literacy program.
Over 5000+ new children's books were donated courtesy of Association members and a donation from the Readers Digest Foundation. A minimum of 500 books per county will be distributed to Literacy Volunteers reading programs in the six counties covered by the Builders Association of the Hudson Valley (Orange, Sullivan, Ulster, Dutchess, Putnam and Westchester).
On hand to collect the first 250 books at the BAHV's holiday reception held Tuesday, December 11 at the Grandview in Poughkeepsie was Roanne Patterson of Eastern Orange Literacy Volunteers. The balance of the books will be distributed shortly to the other Literacy chapters.
Some of the books are distributed to new mothers at area hospitals where they are encouraged to begin reading early to their children as a solid foundation for future literacy. Other books are donated to area day care centers and libraries as part of their early reading programs.
"This is a great program that continues to grow each year. The Committee sets a goal and our members have met the challenge each time" stated Builders Association President Luke Regier. Initially 400 books were collected, which has grown to its current level of 5000+. He went on to say that "our members understand the importance of the Builders Building Literacy theme, and its success is inspiring." President Regier also praised the Readers Digest Foundation, which again generously contributed children's books to help kick-off the 2007 campaign.
As Roanne Patterson of Eastern Orange Literacy Volunteers stated to BAHV members when accepting the books, "Over the years you have helped countless children and families get a great start to reading - one of the most important skills we acquire. - with the donations of these books. A wonderful gift that is graciously appreciated."
