Putnam Valley Community Read Aloud Spreads Holiday Cheer
 | | Students Tasha Velichko and Kaicee Tannone, from PVHS were "elves" helping out at the Holiday Read Aloud program |
| Hundreds of happy faces filled the cafeteria at Putnam Valley Elementary School as the first-ever Holiday Community Read Aloud took place on Saturday, December 15.
As other families sledded on a nearby hill, parents and children from throughout the PV community gathered for holiday refreshments and the opportunity to have a photo taken with a jolly Santa who bore a remarkable resemblance to PV's Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Marc Space.
Volunteer "elves" from PVMS, PVHS, and the PV Music Association dispensed hot chocolate, supervised crafts, provided musical entertainment, and helped to shepherd the younger children around the room. Grown-up volunteers from the Putnam Valley PTA and PTSA, and staff members from Putnam Valley Parks & Recreation (which co-funded the event along with the PV PTA) assisted with everything from crafts to picture taking. PTA volunteer and event coorganizer Roberta Velichko reported, "We ran out of whipped cream on the 350th cup of hot chocolate, so I think it's safe to say that 400-500 people attended."
Regular readings of favorite holiday books highlighted the festivities. PVHS Assistant Principal Sam Oliverio, Jr., assisted Santa (Dr. Space) in reading to the children. The first reading was a fractured version of 'Twas the Night before Christmas- one little boy's view of the night- read by Santa and third grader Robbie Velichko.
This festive day was part of Putnam Valley Reads - The Standard is 25 - an ongoing effort of the PV PTA Educational Enhancement Committee to promote family reading in Putnam Valley.
