Truck Weights Restricted on Village of Nelsonville Streets Pooper Scooper law now in effect by Mike Turton
There are those who would argue vehemently that the term "long-winded politician" could never qualify as an oxymoron. Then again, those who would make that argument have probably never attended a Village of Nelsonville Board of Trustees meeting. Nelsonville is well known for holding brief and efficient Village Board meetings but last week's session on December 17, 2007 may have established a new record. Called to order at 7:34pm, the meeting was adjourned no later than 7:44pm.
Despite its brevity, the meeting touched upon significant items, principally through the approval of the Minutes of the November 19, 2007 meeting. With the approval of those minutes and the necessary submissions to the State of New York, two new local laws will now take effect. Trucks passing through Nelsonville are now restricted to a maximum gross weight of five tons. Exceptions include truck traffic on Route 301, Peekskill Road and Fishkill Road. Local deliveries are also exempt. The new law carries with it a fine of $250 or fifteen days in jail or both.
Trustees also passed a "pooper scooper" law, making dog owners responsible for cleaning up after their pets while on Village property or on private property other than their own. Both laws were reviewed at public hearings held on November 8, 2007.
After receiving a number of letters from residents complaining that the Village of Nelsonville fire hall was unfit to serve as a polling station due to unsafe and unhealthy conditions, the Village Board has requested that the Putnam County Board of Elections approve moving the polling station to the Village of Nelsonville offices. The Town of Philipstown also supported such a move at its last meeting.
In other business the Village will look into possible grants available through the New York State Department of Transport "Safe Routes to School" program which could fund the establishment of two new cross-walks within the Village. The Village of Nelsonville Board of Trustees will meet next on Monday, January 21 at 7:30pm.
