Hike Through theWinter with the Adirondack Mountain Club
The following is a list of hikes sponsored by the Mountain Club over the next few weeks.
On the first and third Thursday of the month, they will lead 3-6 hour hikes to different areas of the Mid Hudson Valley. Hikes are followed by a stop for refreshment or dinner. Contact Lalita Malik, by Tuesday and she will let you know the hike plan, depending on weather and other conditions. Tue Jan 1 Three hills in Poughkeepsie and Hot Chocolate in LaGrange. Walk - get those thighs going. On New Year's Day at Peach Hill, College Hill and Dutchess Community College. If it doesn't rain, snow or hail we'll walk up these three small but prominent hills in Town of Poughkeepsie. Should be good views with all those bare trees. Afterward repair to leader's house for soup, salad and hot chocolate. Bring your favorite cookie to share. Meet: 10:30am Stewart's Shop on Creek Road just south of Dutchess Community College. Sat Jan 12 Snowtubing at Hunter Mountain - Family Fun for the entire family. Join for 2 hours of snow-tubing at Hunter Mountain . After sliding down the 1000' long hill, the "snowtow" will help you back to the top. There is a 42" height requirement to participate. Cost is $14 per person. Severe weather will cancel. Sun. Jan 13 - Appalachian Trail, Moderate, Continuing to explore the AT route through this hike in a neighboring state the from Rt 7 in Conn. to Rt 41 in Salisbury , Conn. , 9.6 miles. One bump is about 1000 feet elevation gain. Meet to carpool at the 44 Plaza Shop Rite in Poughkeepsie , 8am or another convenient location. Call for details based on weather conditions. Sun. Jan 13 - Vanderbilt Estate, 2 hours Walk/Hike For those new to hiking or who prefer a leisurely pace. Enjoy crisp winter air and great river views on a loop hike of Vanderbilt estate, with optional picnic at Bard Rock by the river. Loop following the lower and then upper carriageways. Good hike to try out the snow shoes. In case of rain, we will tour Vanderbilt mansion and enjoy lunch at a local cafe. Do this trail and 4 more on the Hyde Park Greenway and receive a patch from Hyde Park Health Trails Walkabout. Meet: 11am Vanderbilt estate parking lot. Sat Jan 19 - Beginner XC Skiing, Moderate. All levels welcome. Joint LI- Mid Hudson Young Members Group event are geared to those in their 20's and 40's but not restricted to those ages. Sun Jan 27 Appalachian & Menomine Trails in Harriman State Park Difficult. From Hessian Lake to Silvermine Lake , this 9.25-mi. hike will take us over Bear & Black Mtns. with views of the NYC skyline. Steepest single climb is 1100 ft. Moderate pace. Bring lunch, snacks & water. Winter gear (incl. headlamp) and Stabilicers, crampons or snowshoes required, depending on ground cover. Rain or hazardous driving conditions cancel. Sat Feb. 2 - James Baird State Park: Cross-country ski or hike Rain or inclement weather date, Sun Feb. 3. Joint with Sierra Club. An easy ski on the golf course, where we will have a chance to see the habitat set aside for Blandings Turtles and, hopefully, the swans which live here virtually year round. If snow conditions are poor, they will hike in the woods instead. Meet at 10am. Sat Feb 9 - Come Hike the Hudson Highlands, Moderate,Young Member's Group events are geared to those in their 20's and 40's but not restricted to those ages. Actual route and difficulty will be set according to snow conditions, It may be the breakneck ridge scramble or even a XC ski trip in Fahnstock, but we will have to wait and see what the weather holds in store for us, so stay tuned. Though the hike should be at a moderate pace All participants must be willing and able to hike at a fast place if required (does not apply for XC ski). Sun Feb 10 - Mills Mansion to Norrie Point 2 hours Walk or Hike For those new to hiking or who prefer a leisurely pace Think it is too cold for a long outing? Then try a short jaunt by the river on a short hike from Mills Mansion to Norrie Point and back. We will hike to Norrie Point by the river and return via carriage road. Sun Feb 24 - IES Greenhouse, Millbrook Walk Short excursion to this preeminent showcase for tropical or tender exotics and familiar plants. A warm place to hang out for a few hours on a winter day.
